Some dance to remember some dance to forget

Fighting a losing battle; with weight, with laziness and a few escaping grey hairs.

This world is just not fair.

Song as I write: Blue Danube Waltz by Johann Strauss.
Current book - Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farms - Kate Wiggin

As I surf through my daily fare of gossip and pics and blogs, I came across so many pics of the terrible devastation that was Hurricane Katrina. The hurricane might have passed, but the aftermaths stay on. We really hope and wait for the rescue to reach the people timely. It's unimaginable to see the helplessness and pitiful state of affairs, especially since resources seem to be reaching slower than anticipated, but what strikes me with a heart-rending force is all the loss of the lives of innocent, mute, utterly helpless animals. Pets, livestock, animals in shelters, the zoo, did they make it? In times of distress hujan life is measured much more valuable but still, to the pet-owner it must have been awful to know that some of his family could not be rescued (I would, my dog is as much loved than any member of my family). What of the countless strays? I felt that was the most terrible fate the animal could face.. the pics are so heartbreaking.
This says it all..

On a later note, this makes me feel better, somewhat
The Humane Society posts an update everyday on their site. They rescued hundreds of animals on Sunday, including 40 or so from the convention center area. Today they saved hundreds more. They were able to get to the MS areas earlier, basically all week, whereas they only were able to get into New Orleans proper on Sunday morning. And... many organizations have reported overwhelming calls and support of all kinds (monetary, volunteers, supplies, shelters, homes, etc) after their numbers were on Larry King and the plight of the animals more widely talked about. So hopefully this will continue and they'll be able to save as many as possible...and hopefully reunite many owners and pets.
